The sentence of a Windsor man who tried to kill his girlfriend by setting her house on fire has been nearly doubled.
The decision by the Ontario Court of Appeal came down on Wednesday with the judges ruling the initial sentence for Kenneth Kormendy was "unfit".
Kormendy tried to trap his girlfriend and two of her children inside the burning building on Balfour Boulevard in 2015 and was given 11 years behind bars after being convicted of attempted murder and arson.
The Crown appealed saying the sentence was inadequate.
Kormendy will now face a sentence of 20 years with credit for the time he served in pre-sentence custody.
The court of appeal said the trial judge made a number of errors that affected the sentence such as dismissing the gravity of the offence and the moral "blameworthiness" of the offender.
Kormendy met his girlfriend online in 2015 and moved into her house after dating for a couple of weeks. However, their domestic relationship quickly deteriorated, and after the two weeks she asked him to move out. The court heard that she found him controlling and clingy. He did not want her visiting family and friends during the day while he was at work or talking to her friends on the phone and did not want her to attend her father’s birthday dinner.
