More than 3,000 people left the workforce in Windsor last month, enough to push the jobless rate up to six per cent.
Statistics Canada released its monthly Labour Force Survey Friday.
It showed an increase in the unemployment rate of one-tenth of a percent from July.
The labour force went from about 170,100 in July to 168,000 in August.
The labour participation rate fell to 60.5 per cent as a result.
Nationally, 81,000 net jobs were added to the Canadian economy holding the unemployment rate at 5.7 per cent. Almost all the gains were in part-time work, and Ontario accounted for 58,000 positions, as its jobless rate stayed firm at 5.6 per cent.
Statistics Canada said gains were made in private sector employment making up for losses in July. Positions were filled in finance, insurance, real estate, education services, and rental and leasing.
There was a contraction in employment in business, building, and support services.
