Like cities and towns around the world, Windsor will be holding a Global Climate Strike next week.
The Global Climate Strike website says the purpose of the demonstrations is "to demand an end to the age of fossil fuels and climate justice for everyone."
Strikes will coincide with the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York City on September 23.
"Global emissions are reaching record levels and show no sign of peaking," read an excerpt on the summit's website. "The last four years were the four hottest on record, and winter temperatures in the Arctic have risen by 3 C since 1990."
The excerpt continues to say, "the impacts of climate change are being felt everywhere and are having very real consequences on people's lives."
A youth summit Saturday will give young environmentalists a chance to showcase their solutions to the United Nations.
Chatham-Kent is holding its strike Saturday, and in Windsor, it will be at Charles Clark Square September 27 starting at 2:30 p.m.
"I don't know what we expect to accomplish, but some of us feel we can no longer sit idly by and let politicians deal with it because they are not taking it seriously enough," said Michael Cowtan of Chatham, an organizer of the strike there.
"When you look at the federal and provincial plans, they're a joke," said another organizer, Rob Girard. "They're nowhere near going to meet the Paris Climate Treaty targets that we signed a few years ago."
In 2015, Canada had pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent of 2005 levels by the year 2030.
