The president of CUPE Ontario says a strike at Ontario schools can be avoided if the Ford government recognize that cuts in schools are hurting students.
Fred Hahn was in Windsor Wednesday to speak to health care workers about the Communities Not Cuts campaign.
He said they are fighting cuts to community services in many ways, including the bargaining table.
"The cuts that they've instituted means that services are being lost for kids and that they can actually put an end to that. They can guarantee some jobs for our members which guarantees services for kids in schools," said Hahn.
Hahn said members were meeting with the Council of Trustees and government officials Wednesday.
On Monday, around 55,000 CUPE education workers, including secretaries, education assistants, early childhood educators, custodians, maintenance workers, IT employees, and librarians, voted 93 per cent in favour of job action.
The Communities, Not Cuts campaign is a multi-year campaign in which CUPE works with its members, other unions, neighbourhoods, and families to defend public services.
