The fire broke out in the bedroom of the apartment around 2:30 a.m. on September 23, 2019.
The Ontario Fire Marshall office was called to investigate because of the injuries sustained.
Their investigation determined the cause of the fire was careless smoking. The blaze caused around $200,000 in damage.
SPS Board Chair Kelly Ash confirmed they are aware of the criminal investigation, but said she couldn't provide much of a comment.
