Leamington family organizes massive turkey giveaway

A Leamington family is giving away over 600 turkeys to families in Essex County this Saturday.

Mike Diab and his wife have organized the 'Talking Over Turkey" giveaway event for the last three years. It started with just 50 turkeys and grew from there.

"It's really a culmination of a lot of months work and food product that was donated to my wife and I and many volunteers to disperse throughout the County of Essex. We're really excited about it," said Diab

The turkeys, along with a box of groceries and produce, will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Highbury Canco parking lot starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 14, 2019.

"There's no strings attached. We don't need registration or validation and it's open to all who can benefit from a turkey," said Diab.

All of the food donated this year came from local farmers and producers. The turkeys were purchased at a negotiated rate with Belwood Produce in Amherstburg and food was donated by Highbury Canco, Sunbrite Canning, Nature Fresh, and Mucci Farms along with some local grocery stores.

Diab said the giveaway started as a way for him and his wife to pay it forward and he hopes the event helps spread the spirit of giving.

"Maybe one day they can find a way to pay it forward as well. That's really what we're trying to perpetuate, it's just a large scale pay it forward to those that can when they can," said Diab.
