Blood donors needed over the holidays

There's one way to give back over the holidays that won't cost you anything.

Canadian Blood Services in Windsor-Essex needs to fill nearly 200 appointments between now and December 31, 2019.

"I know it's a very busy time for people in the community, spending time with family and friends or just taking the time out just to relax but if you can spare an hour of your time we'd really appreciate it," said Marisa Gatfield, territory manager for Windsor-Essex.

Donations over the holidays are particularly important to collect platelets, a component of blood that only has a shelf life of seven days. Platelets are needed by many patients living with cancer and blood disorders.

The clinic on Grand Marais in Windsor is open Boxing Day, December 27, 28, and 30.

For residents in Essex County, Canadian Blood Services is holding a blood drive Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Harrow Arena.
