UPDATE: Electrical failure causes high-rise fire

Electrical failure is getting the blame after a fire broke out a high-rise apartment building in downtown Windsor.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services responded to the fire on the fifth floor of the building Pelissier Street and Park Street West Wednesday afternoon. The blaze caused smoke to fill the fifth and sixth floors.

Most residents in the building were able to shelter in place during the fire, however, electricity was turned off in the building.

The electrical fire is considered accidental and the owner is taking care of remediating the building.

A damage estimate has not been released at this time.

Windsor police closed Park Street from Ouellette Avenue to Victoria Avenue, as well as the nothbound lanes on Pelissier Street between Wyandotte Street and University Avenue while fire crews were at the scene. Both roads have since been reopened.
