Charges filed in Bruce Avenue standoff

Windsor police say charges have been laid against a 50-year-old man in connection with a day-long standoff.

Officers were held at bay for almost eleven hours Wednesday outside a home on Bruce Avenue between Karl Place and Park Street West. Police were first called to the location around 6:45 a.m. for a possible stabbing. The victim was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Police repeatedly communicated with a man who had barricaded himself in the home. Around 5:30 p.m., the man emerged waving a weapon and showing aggressive behaviour toward the police. Officers tased the man to subdue him, then took him into custody.

A warrant was soon obtained to search the property, and a variety of items associated with the incident were seized, according to Sergeant Steve Betteridge.

James Tooshkenig of Windsor is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of uttering threats, and one count of forcible confinement. These charges have not been proven in court.

The WPS Major Crimes Division is still investigating this incident.
