The Windsor Port Authority is conducting a study to assess how its waterfront infrastructure may be affected by climate change.
"Are we ready for intense storm events? Would a series of significant storm events interrupt port and economic operations on this port? When 846 people come to work here every day, that's a concern," said Steve Salmons, president and CEO of the Windsor Port Authority.
The $140,630 project is being funded through the Ministry of Transport's Transportation Assets Risk Assessment Program and will be completed by Dillon Consulting over a six month period.
The study will identify the level of risk to the authority's assets and propose a treatment plan to mitigate those risks.
"Remember, 90 per cent of everything you touch, hold, eat wear, sleep on, comes on a ship at some point in its product life. We cannot ignore our water highway," said Salmons.
The project data will be shared with the Essex Regional Conservation Authority to contribute to climate change information on a regional level.
