Prescribed burn planned for Spring Garden Natural Area

If you see smoke rising in west Windsor, it might just be the prescribed burn underway at the Spring Garden Natural Area this weekend.

The City of Windsor will be burning about 24-hectares of property on Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 15.

Neighbouring landowners have been notified.

"Continued burning is necessary in order to maintain a healthy and diverse ecosystem in the Ojibway Prairie area, which is the largest stand of tallgrass prairie remaining in Ontario," said a release from the city. "The controlled burn is part of a comprehensive restoration plan for this sensitive area."

The burns have been part of a collaborative effort to maintain the Spring Garden Natural Area for the past three decades.
