WECHU reporting 22 new cases of COVID-19

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reporting 22 new cases of COVID-19 in the region.

Only six of the new cases are linked to the agricultural sector, four are among health care employees, and 12 are still under investigation.

"Our team is rapidly catching up on all the cases and right now I can't say whether if they are all close contacts or community spread," said Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health for Windsor Essex.

The health unit is currently managing outbreaks at two long-term care facilities, Extendicare Tecumseh and the Village of Aspen Lakes.

Dr. Ahmed is asking all local residents to keep in mind public health measures while celebrating Canada Day on Wednesday.

"Any celebration should be kept to no more than 10 people, please keep physical distancing at all times unless the gathering is all members of your social circle," said Dr. Ahmed.

There will not be a COVID-19 briefing on Canada Day.
