Impaired charges in February crash on Highway 77

A Leamington man faces charges after a February crash on Highway 77 that injured seven people.

The four-vehicle crash was around 8:15 p.m. February 23 at Road 6.

The Ontario Provincial Police said three vehicles were northbound when one headed southbound crossed the centre line.

The lone occupant of the southbound vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries, while six people in the northbound vehicles were hurt. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

The driver of the southbound vehicle faces two counts of driving while suspended, and a count of driving while prohibited. He is also charged impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and having over 80 mg of alcohol in his blood while operating a vehicle.

The charges against 59-year-old David Loewen have not been proven in court. He is expected to make an appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice in Leamington on August 20.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
