United Way to hand out backpacks to students in need Thursday

The United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County is hosting its Backpacks for Success backpack pick-up again Thursday morning.

On Tuesday, families in need were invited to pick them up at St. James Catholic Elementary, Catholic Central High School, and St. Louis Catholic Elementary in Leamington.

On Thursday, they can pick them up at West Gate Public School, Dougall Ave. Public School, and in Leamington, at Leamington District Secondary School.

Parents can register at those schools. It is first-come, first-serve while supplies last, and the giveaway starts at 11 a.m. It wraps up at 1 p.m.

The giveaway is the wrap up for the United Way's Summer Eats for Kids program.

More than 1,500 backpacks will be handed out by Thursday afternoon.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
