New start times for public school students

The Greater Essex County District School Board has changed the date for the first day of school.

Instead of class, September 8 and 9 will be reorganization days.

"A staggered approach to school start-up, beginning on September 10, will provide the GECDSB additional time to reorganize staff assignments and student timetables for all in-person and virtual school classes," the school board said in a news release. "[It] will provide opportunities for schools to ensure that health and safety practices and new school protocols are reviewed and practiced before the full complement of students returns to each building."

Starting on Thursday, September 10, the first group of students in grades one to eight will begin class. The second group will begin on Friday, September 11. The regular class schedule will start on September 16.

Junior and senior kindergarten will still start on September 14 and 15.

There are changes for secondary school students too.

The first cohort of Grade 9 students will start school orientation on September 10. The second cohort in that grade will have orientation on September 11.

Grade 9 and 10 students in cohort A will attend period one on September 14, with cohort B attending period one on September 15.

On those days, Grade 11 and 12 students will learn online.

Those in Grades 9 to 12 in cohort A will be in class on September 16 and 17, and cohort B on September 18.

"This approach allows staff to support our students' successful return to the new school environment in smaller groups to learn and review these important health and safety measures," the school board said in the release.
