Students cleared to return at two local Catholic schools

Students at two Windsor-Essex Catholic schools may return to class Tuesday after a possible exposure to COVID-19 was reported.

Seven students at Villanova High School in LaSalle were sent home on Friday, along with a total of 40 students at Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School in Amherstburg.

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board said that the cohorts were dismissed because of a potential case of coronavirus exposure. The students were at first told to stay home, self-isolate, and attend classes online, but it has since been determined that the students are not in danger of contracting the virus.

"It has since been confirmed that there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 among the dismissed cohorts and the students can return to school," according to a statement from the board.

Stella Maris School had previously been the focus of a confirmed COVID-19 case. A student had tested positive in mid-September, and a cohort of about 20 students was told to self-isolate. Classes went on at the school as scheduled.

There are currently no COVID-19 exposures at the English Catholic board, or any of the other Windsor-Essex school boards, according to the local health unit figures from Monday.
