Apartment fire blamed on unattended cooking

Fire officials have said inattention to cooking was to blame for an incident at a Windsor apartment building.

It happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on the seventh floor of the Marine City Apartments at the corner of Ouellette Avenue and Tecumseh Road East.

Firefighters quickly determined that the fire was caused by careless cooking and they were able to put the fire out within a half-hour. The building had to be evacuated.

No injuries were reported. The damage was limited to minor smoke in the affected suite, according to Windsor Fire and Rescue. No damage estimate was reported, and residents were allowed to return to their units by 8 p.m.

The intersection of Ouellette Avenue and Tecumseh Road was closed while crews were dealing with the problem. It has since reopened.
