Death of retirement home resident who got COVID-19 vaccine under investigation

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has confirmed there is an investigation underway after a resident of a local retirement home passed away after receiving the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

“I don’t want people to think that all of this investigation is linked only because of the vaccine,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed. “There are other factors, health history, a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration before we can even say that. Please don’t get me wrong here, this investigation is not linked to the vaccine only.”

Dr. Ahmed said the investigation is focusing on the chain of events and if the death itself can be linked to the vaccine.

“As a clinician and a public health professional, I would definitely be more focused on understanding what happened, what caused it, and if there’s anything that we need to be aware of as we continue to roll out the vaccine,” said Dr. Ahmed.

There is no clear timeline on when the investigation will be complete.

“At this time, based on all the data that we have the vaccine continues to be safe and the most effective way to prevent COVID-19,” said Dr. Ahmed.
