JP Wiser's hand sanitizer on list of recalled brands

Health Canada has issued a recall for a group of hand sanitizers that do not meet its health requirements. One of them involves a product made in Windsor.

The recall, issued Wednesday, covers eight brands of hand sanitizers, including one made by JP Wiser's Distillery. That one is on the list because it contains the denaturant ethyl acetate, which is not considered acceptable by Health Canada.

"Frequent use of hand sanitizer containing ethyl acetate may cause dry skin, leading to irritation or cracking," read the recall notice.

According to Health Canada, denaturants are added to ethanol to make it taste bad, to discourage the unintentional ingestion of hand sanitizers, especially by children.

Hiram Walker and Sons Limited, the parent company of JP Wiser's, is listed as the recalling company.

If you have this hand sanitizer or any of the products on the list, stop using it and return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

The recall notice did not name any reported health problems due to the use of the products, but if you've used any of them and have concerns, contact your health care provider.
