Hand sanitizer given to public by city not recalled

The City of Windsor wants to reassure the public the hand sanitizer it gave out to residents last year was not a batch recalled by Health Canada.

Health Canada issued a recall of hand sanitizer made by JP Wiser earlier this week because it may cause skin irritation.

The recall prompted city officials to review their records.

While it did receive a batch containing ethyl acetate in March 2020, it was used for internal purposes only. A separate batch, not containing the chemical at the centre of the recall. That was given away to the public.

"As we understand, refinement to the production methods were undertaken between this initial/early batch and all subsequent deliveries. It was only these later deliveries from Hiram Walker & Sons Ltd. which, in turn, were made available to local businesses and individuals," read a statement from the city.

The second batch was given away between May and September of last year.

"Therefore, to the best of our knowledge, none of the product distributed by the City of Windsor is presently covered under the Health Canada advisory," continued the statement.
