Michigan man charged with overfishing in Amherstburg area

A Rockwood, Michigan man will have to pay a $2,000 fine after a judge in Windsor found him guilty of overfishing in the Amherstburg area.

Conservation officers were on a marine patrol on the Detroit River on April 7, 2020, when they stopped Larry Hanning in his boat. He was headed back to Michigan after fishing for walleye near Amherstburg.

When the officers inspected his boat, they found 19 walleye in the boat's live well, 13 more than his sport fishing quota of six fish.

The case was heard remotely in the Ontario Court of Justice on April 23, 2021.

In addition to the fine, Hanning is prohibited from possessing an Ontario fishing license and fishing in Canada for two years.

"The Ontario government wants to remind anglers that fishing limits are in place to maintain sustainable fisheries for future generations to enjoy," said the Ministry of Natural Resources in a release.
