Three people rescued in weekend boating incident

Ontario Provincial Police say three people are safe after a scary incident off Kingsville Friday afternoon.

The OPP responded to a vessel distress call on Lake Erie at around 12:45 p.m. According to Constable Steven Duguay, the operator of the 29-footer was fighting high winds and waves, and the vessel began to take on water. The boat eventually sank with everyone on board, though everyone was supported in the water with life jackets.

In response to 911 calls from witnesses onshore, the OPP Marine Unit and Joint Rescue Coordination Centre were engaged.

However, a civilian boat made its way out on the lake and rescued the three people in the water before any OPP units arrived.

No injuries were reported.

The OPP would like to remind boaters that having properly fitted life jackets and flotation devices is crucial to safety on the water, as conditions can change instantly.
