Boosters for LTC residents starting next week

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit will start administering COVID-19 vaccine boosters to residents of long-term care homes next week.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said the health unit had already been working on a plan with the different homes.

He said some facilities will have the ability to give out the booster with their own staff, while others will need the assistance of the health unit.

"All of those operational details are currently being worked at, but we are confident that starting next week, we will be giving out third dose boosters to all of these long-term care homes and high-risk retirement settings," said Dr. Ahmed.

The boosters right now are just for residents. Staff and primary caregivers will not be receiving a booster at this time.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore gave approval to health units this week to give booster shots to vulnerable populations like transplant recipients, patients with hematological cancers, recipients of an anti-CD20 agent, and residents of long-term care homes.
