WECHU reports 66 new COVID-19 cases

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 66 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday.

There are 543 active cases in the community now. Of those, 384 have been identified as a variant of concern.

Local hospitals are treating 17 patients who have tested positive for the virus. Windsor Regional Hospital has 12 patients in its care and of those, five are unvaccinated and one is partially vaccinated. There are four people in the intensive care unit there, three of whom are not fully vaccinated.

The health unit is monitoring 19 active outbreaks in the region. There are 16 workplace outbreaks, two community outbreaks and one long-term care outbreak.

Since the start of school, there have been three cases identified within different classrooms.

Within the Greater Essex County District School Board, a student at Bellewood Public School and a student at Queen Victoria Public School tested positive after attending class.

With the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board, a student at Stella Maris Catholic School tested positive.

So far, there has been no spread within the classroom.

To date, 73.7 per cent of the eligible population is fully vaccinated.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
