Officer assaulted during arrest

A Windsor police officer was assaulted while arresting an alleged impaired driver Thursday.

Around 10 a.m., police were called to the area of Tecumseh Road West near Huron Church Road.

Responding officers found the male driver inside a black jeep parked at a business. They determined the driver was impaired and told him he was being arrested.

The driver tried to take off in the vehicle and then took off on foot. An officer caught up with the suspect, and a struggle ensued. The officer was assaulted, and the suspect tried to disarm the officer of their taser.

The suspect took off and was eventually found on St. Clair Avenue. A 23-year-old man of no fixed address is charged with impaired driving, resisting arrest, attempting to take a weapon from a police officer, assaulting a police officer, failing to comply with a release order, and escaping lawful custody. The charges have not been proven in court.

The officer was not seriously injured during the assault.
