Alleged vehicle thief arrested for fleeing police

A Leamington man is facing numerous charges following a chain of events that included a stolen truck and fishing boat.

Ontario Provincial Police say an officer from the Leamington detachment was on patrol at around 3 a.m. on September 16 when they saw a pickup truck towing a rowboat without the proper trailer lights operating.

OPP Constable Steven Duguay said the officer tried to stop the driver, but the driver took off. A short time later, the pickup went over several curbs, causing severe damage. The driver then lost control and hit a powerline cable support. The man tried to run but was soon subdued and arrested.

The investigation eventually determined that the truck and boat were stolen.

The 22-year-old man is charged with fleeing a peace officer, dangerous operation of a vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and driving while suspended.

These charges have not been proven in court. The suspect will have a chance to respond to the counts in a Leamington court on November 19.
