SIU investigating after driver exits moving vehicle

The province's police oversight agency is investigating after a driver was injured during an attempted roadside stop by a Windsor police officer.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said on Friday at around 8:30 p.m., an off-duty Windsor Police Service officer saw a pickup truck being driven erratically in the area of Huron Church Road at Cabana Road in LaSalle, and reported it.

An on-duty police officer then spotted the vehicle on Howard Avenue and attempted to pull the driver over.

During the attempted roadside stop, the driver exited the vehicle while it was still in motion and the vehicle struck a pole in the area of Howard Avenue and Alma Street in Amherstburg.  The driver was then rushed to hospital with a serious injury.

As a result, the SIU has announced it is investigating the incident.

The SIU is a civilian oversight agency that investigates incidents involving police officers that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
