SIU clears OPP after suspect overdoses twice

Officers with the Lakeshore detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are in the clear after a suspect overdosed while in custody not just once but twice.

Police arrested the 30-year-old man last April before he suffered medical distress. The officers took him to the hospital, where he received treatment for an overdose.

The following morning, he suffered a second overdose in his cell.

Once again, the officers took him to the hospital for treatment.

The Special Investigations Unit noted his symptoms were recognized quickly by the officers who did not delay getting medical help.

The man also suffered no serious injuries.

Since the SIU only investigates incidents involving police that involve a fatality, sexual assault, or serious injury, it terminated the investigation.
