ATV and UTV riders causing damage at Hillman Marsh

The Essex Region Conservation Authority wants to remind ATV and UTV riders their presence in conservation areas is not welcome and illegal.

Over the past month, crews have been working to restore the dykes at Hillman Marsh, but some 4-wheel drive vehicles, ATV, and UTV users have caused significant damage at the site.

The agency has contacted police and said anyone caught riding a motorized vehicle in a conservation area will face penalties under the Conservation Authorities Act and the Trespass to Properties Act.

"ATV and any motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited in all conservation areas, including Hillman Marsh," said CAO Tim Byrne. "In addition to causing further erosion at this already fragile area, these unlawful activities are also potentially disturbing nesting habitats of a number of endangered species."

Anyone found disturbing endangered species or destroying habitats could face additional penalties.
