Belle River's Desjarlais released from Blue Bombers

Belle River-native Drew Desjarlais is a step closer to realizing his NFL dreams.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers released the offensive lineman on Tuesday to pursue a career in the NFL. He was set to become a free agent next month.

The Blue Bombers haven't said what team Desjarlais would sign on with, but TSN reports he could sign a futures deal with the New England Patriots.

Desjarlais was a first-round pick in the 2019 CFL draft, fourth chosen overall, from the University of Windsor.

He's been with the Blue Bombers for two seasons and was named West Division All-Star last season.

Desjarlais also helped the Bombers win two Grey Cup Championships in 2021 and 2019. The 2020 season was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
