The redevelopment of a west Windsor park has been made possible, in part, by the team building the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
The bridge's project team has pledged $200,000 toward the redevelopment of McKee Park, a green space on the riverfront that is popular with boaters thanks to its boat launch. Altogether, the City of Windsor will have $400,000 to spend on revamping the park.
Ward 2 Councillor Fabio Costante said it was important for the city to recognize the neighbourhood's connection to the water.
"One of the unique features and benefits of McKee Park is its connection to the water along with the boat ramp that is regularly used," said Costante. "As a result, protecting the shoreline is critically important so that we can enjoy other features of the park, including the boardwalk, playground, trails and other amenities."
The work will be done in three phases, with the first two beginning in March. Phase one will consist of installing the boardwalk and gazebo, with the boardwalk made out of recycled plastics. Phase two will focus on new trails, lighting, silos, and benches.
The third and final stage will be the installation of a new, accessible playground, which is separately funded through the City's playground rehabilitation program.
The bridge authority's $200,000 contribution comes from its ongoing Community Benefits Fund. Another $150,000 is from the City's capital budget, and the rest comes from Ward 2 funds.
Mayor Drew Dilkens said these upgrades are vital to neighbourhood growth, and projects such as the Gordie Howe Bridge help make them possible.
"These efforts require strong bonds across the community," said Dilkens. "Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) and Bridging North America (BNA) have been excellent partners to the City as we work together to build the state-of-the-art Gordie Howe International Bridge. Their significant investment in McKee Park and other parts of Windsor’s west end will improve the quality of life for residents and visitors for many years to come."
The project is expected to be completed by fall.
