Pandemic death toll continues to rise

The pandemic death toll in Windsor and Essex County continues to rise with five more deaths reported in the region on Thursday.

The Windsor Essex County Health unit reported a woman in her 40s, a man in his 50s, a man and a woman in their 80s, and a man in his 90s passed away after testing positive for the virus.

There were 53 COVID-19 related deaths in January, more than the previous two months combined. In total, the community has had 559 deaths associated with the virus.

The health unit also recorded another 158 new high-risk cases, bringing the total number of known active cases up to 1,174.

Local hospitals are treating 70 patients who have tested positive for the virus.

Windsor Regional Hospital has 56 patients in its care and six are being treated in the ICU.

At Erie Shores Healthcare, there are 10 COVID-19 positive admissions.

Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare has four COVID-19 positive patients in its care.

The health unit continues to monitor 69 active outbreaks in the community. Three of four outbreaks within units at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare have been rescinded.

The latest epidemiological study shows a decline in many COVID-19 indicators.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
