OPP rescues two snowmobilers in Leamington

There were some tense moments for two snowmobilers who went through the ice Sunday night in Leamington.

Ontario Provincial Police say emergency crews were called to Hillman Marsh near East Beach Road at around 10 p.m. The pair of snowmobilers had gone through the ice in that area. One of the snowmobilers made it to shore safely, but the other needed to be rescued by the ice rescue units from the Leamington and Kingsville Fire Departments.

Police say both people were taken to hospital for treatment.

Both snowmobilers were issued Roadside Screening Device (RSD) demands, and one was issued a three-day licence suspension.

The OPP is reminding snowmobilers that ice conditions may be unpredictable, particularly with temperature fluctuations that have been in the region over the past week. Anyone who wants to go onto the ice for snowmobiling, ice fishing, or other activities is strongly urged to assess and manage the risks, as well as head out with caution and an emergency plan.
