OPP identify drowning victim

A man from Guatemala has been identified as the individual who drowned in Lake Erie last week.

David Josue Mendez-Ramirez, 24, was pulled from the water in Leamington on Monday, June 20, 2022.

Bystanders on the beach tried to resuscitate the victim before paramedics arrived. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

"The OPP wish to thank members of the public for their efforts in attempting to save the victim's life prior to the arrival of OPP and Emergency Medical Services," said Provincial Constable Steven Duguay in a news release.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
