Hoops for Hope raises money for Downtown Mission on Saturday

Basketball fans can take in some local play and help fight poverty at the St. Clair College Sportsplex.

Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Hoops for Hope gets underway to raise money for the Downtown Mission.

The event is free to the public, although they are asked to bring cash, food, or toiletry donations.

Until 4 p.m., 40 teams will compete in an open 3X3 tournament for a $300 prize.

The event could raise $5,000 for the Downtown Mission.

"Of all the people that we help, no one is there by choice but due to some unfortunate incident or accident," said Executive Director Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin.

Students in St. Clair's event management program organized the tournament.
