Two events that have drawn crowds in Windsor-Essex this summer have gotten an additional boost from the provincial government.
The 2022 CanAm Police Fire Games, held throughout the region, and the Town of Tecumseh's 100th Birthday Celebration; have each received investments from the province to support safe experiences and stimulate economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie announced Friday that $94,551 was set aside for the Can-Am Police-Fire Games, plus $42,117 for Tecumseh's centennial celebration. Both events have since ended.
"Our government recognizes the important contributions that festivals and events make to local communities," said Dowie in a media release. "I couldn’t be happier in delivering support to our municipalities for their safe, innovative experiences that helped to reconnect people while boosting our local economy and creating local jobs."
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens added that the CanAm Games were a tremendous success.
"These Games are drawing visitors, benefitting our tourism and hospitality sectors, our businesses and our economy," said Dilkens. "They are inspiring us to push ourselves to accomplish great things. The Games are particularly meaningful because they involve our Police, Fire, Corrections, Border and EMS personnel, giving Windsor-Essex and Ontario an opportunity to thank our heroes for the tremendous commitment and dedication they bring to their work and our communities before, during and post-pandemic."
The Reconnect Ontario program is an initiative through the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, and it encourages the generation of local tourism dollars. The funding for the two Windsor-Essex events is part of a $48-million package that supports events throughout Ontario this summer.
