Social media hoax claims serial killer on the loose in Essex County

A social media post circulating that says a serial killer or abductor is currently hunting in Leamington is a hoax.

The Ontario Provincial Police say similar posts have been made on community sites across Canada and the USA with the intent of inciting fear in those communities.

"Essex County OPP would like to advise the public that there is no known threat to the communities within Essex County associated with the post," said OPP Constable Steven Duguay.

Anyone who sees this post or similar posts is encouraged to report it to Facebook or the social media site it is posted on.
