Fire destroys home in Cottam, one person displaced

An early morning fire in Cottam destroyed an old farmhouse and left the lone occupant homeless.

Fire crews from Cottam and Kingsville were called to the scene at the corner of County Road 34 and County Road 27 just after 3 a.m. on Monday and found the home fully engulfed.

Firefighters used an aerial truck to put the flames out and left around 7 a.m.

The resident escaped unharmed, but damage to the house is "extensive," according to Kingsville Fire Chief John Quennell.

"The roof collapsed, and everything inside is gone," he said.

Quenneville said the cause is undetermined.

He said damage to the home and the contents is worth around $300,000.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
