UPDATE: OPP investigating death in Leamington

Officers with the Ontario Provincial Police Essex County Detachment have laid murder charges against a man after the death of a woman in Leamington.

Officers were called to a property on Mill Street East around 5:40 p.m. Thursday where they found the body of a deceased woman. The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch and the Chief Coroner of Ontario have been called to assist in the investigation.

Late Friday afternoon, police announced 38-year-old Leamington man is charged with second-degree murder. The identity of the woman is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The accused was taken into custody and made a court appearance in Windsor on Friday.

The OPP says there is no concern for public safety at this time, however an increased police presence can be expected in the area whole the investigation continues.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
