UPDATE: SIU invokes mandate after man dies in submerged vehicle

Ontario's law-enforcement oversight agency is now involved after a man presumably died Tuesday in a vehicle.

Few details have been provided, but Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to a person-in-distress call at Cedar Creek Inlet at around 9:30 Tuesday morning.

The man's cell phone was pinged, revealing the vehicle in the Cedar Island Beach area. As the officer's vehicle approached, the man drove his car into the water.

Efforts have been made to rescue the man, who police say is now presumed dead.

The OPP has contacted the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which has invoked its mandate and taken over the investigation.

Anyone with information should call the SIU at (416) 622-2342.
