UPDATE: SIU called over Lakeshore incident

The agency that oversees police has invoked its mandate after a 21-year-old man suffered serious injuries during an incident involving the Ontario Provincial Police in Lakeshore.

The OPP had a heavy police presence on West Belle River Road between County Road 22 and County Road 42.

The Special Investigations Unit said the OPP got a report about an erratic man on Monday afternoon and found him on West Belle River Road.

Soon after, he ran at the officer with a weapon and took a gun from the police cruiser before fleeing.

The man was rushed to the hospital after he was pulled from the river.

Officers also found the gun.

The SIU invokes its mandate whenever there is a sexual assault, injury, or fatality involving police.
