Final municipality in Essex County ends COVID-19 mandatory vaccination policy

The last municipality in Essex County to insist municipal employees have at least two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine has suspended the policy.

Tecumseh Town Councillors revoked the policy during Tuesday night's meeting.

The policy was approved two years ago at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The City of Windsor was the first in the region to revoke its policy last November. In the following months, Lakeshore, Kingsville, Essex, LaSalle, Leamington, and Amherstburg followed suit.

A report to councillors pointed out recent human resources case law no longer supports two doses as reasonable.

An arbitrator ruled in June 2022 that a policy at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was "no longer reasonable going forward due to the evolving scientific evidence regarding the COVID-19 virus."

The World Health Organization declared the end of the pandemic in May.
