Amherstburg, Lakeshore, LaSalle to vote on regional garbage proposal

Amherstburg town councillors will debate whether to upload garbage collection to the county and adopt an organic waste program on Monday night.

The proposal has had mixed success elsewhere in the county, with Leamington and Tecumseh approving it and Essex and Kingsville voting no.

The plan must be approved by four of the seven municipalities in the county, totalling at least half of the overall population.

LaSalle tackles the issue on Tuesday night, and a report to councillors recommends they vote in favour.

In Lakeshore, councillors also weigh in on the issue.

Windsor City Council adopted the plan last month, and if it goes ahead, the city expects to issue a request for proposals this fall, with the new contract taking effect in 2025.

The proposal would shift the region to bi-weekly garbage collection with weekly organic pickup and more dates for yard waste disposal.
