Windsor officer charged with criminal harassment

Windsor police say one of their officers has been arrested on a harassment charge.

Few details are available, but police confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Constable Joshua Smith was charged with criminal harassment, indecent communications, and harassing communications. The alleged behaviour took place while he was off duty.

Police reported that Smith and the victim are known to each other. Smith has been with the service for five years.

"As the matter is now before the court, the Windsor Police Service will not comment or release further information regarding this investigation," read a media release Wednesday.

Smith has been suspended with pay as the investigation progresses.

This is the second instance within a week of a Windsor police officer facing a criminal charge. Sergeant Deler Bal was arrested by Ottawa police on Saturday for assault following an off-duty incident in a restaurant.

The charges facing both officers have not been proven in court.
