Original Peace Fountain comes down for last time

The original Charles Brooks Memorial Peace Fountain will come out of the Detroit River for the last time on Friday.

The fountain has been a fixture in Reaume Park since 1978. It has been installed every spring and taken out in the fall for the last 45 years.

It was named in honour of Charles Brooks, a union leader who made significant contributions to social progress and worker welfare.

A new fountain will be installed in 2025. The new floating water fountain will emulate the original but will have additional features like different lighting and programming.

City council made the decision to replace the fountain because its ageing parts are expensive to repair.
