Pickup with 5 people inside plunges into Lake Erie

A 19-year-old is facing impaired driving charges after a pickup truck with five people inside plunged into Lake Erie Wednesday night.

Leamington OPP were called to Point Pelee Drive and Mersea Road C around 9 p.m. after the truck left the road and went into the lake.

All five occupants escaped the crash with no injuries.

The 19-year-old driver was placed under arrest and is facing charges of operating a vehicle while impaired, dangerous driving, and being a novice driver with a blood alcohol concentration above zero. The charges have not been proven in court.

The truck is still in the lake due to unsafe conditions for the recovery team. An attempt to remove the vehicle will be made once weather conditions improve.
