Candlelight vigil for parents who have lost a child

The Canadian Mental Health Association Windsor-Essex County Branch is holding its fifteenth candlelight vigil for bereaved parents and families who have lost a child.

The international event is on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at the Fogolar Furlan Club on North Service Road in Windsor.

It's an extension of the CMHA-WECB's Bereavement Program and is an opportunity for parents and families to come together to honour and remember their child.

Parents are encouraged to bring a photo of their child to place on the memorial table, light a candle, and walk in an outdoor candlelit procession.

"Whether the death occurred quite recently or some time ago, all are welcome to share in this time devoted to togetherness, support, and healing," said Mental Health Educator Sonia McMahon-Comartin. "We are privileged to offer this setting as an opportunity for togetherness and heartfelt connection for many whose lives have been touched by a child who died, regardless of age or circumstance."

The event is free.

"A group of grievers no one wants to be a part of, but when we found ourselves in this nightmare we never thought we'd experience, this group has been a life raft in the storm," said Sarah, who lost her brother to suicide earlier this year. "The connections we have built and the support system between people who get it. We are immensely grateful."

The program consists of reflections, music, and messages of hope.
