Canadian Blood Services opens new plasma donation centre

The new plasma donation centre in the Roundhouse Centre on Howard Avenue is open.

Canadian Blood Services closed its blood donation centre on Grand Marais in the summer to focus on plasma donation.

"We have seen an increase in the need for plasma protein products throughout Canada so we wanted to make sure we were helping support Canadian patients and having our donors come out and donate plasma is something that will help Canadian patients," said Judy Jones, associate director of sales and integration at Canadian Blood Services.

Appointments can be made online or through the Canadian Blood Services app.

"Normally you do the questions that you would have when doing a whole blood donation and then you come down to our comfy beds and while you're on the bed a machine draws the blood from your arm, the machine separates the blood, collects only the plasma and the rest of the blood is returned to you," said Jones.

She said donors can make appointments every seven days if they wish because the red blood cells are returned to the body and plasma regenerates quicker than whole blood.
