The Windsor Police Service has demoted a 21-year veteran after pleading guilty to two counts of discreditable conduct under the Ontario Police Services Act.
The first count against Sergeant Steven Gawadzyn involved unwanted and inappropriate conduct involving a female officer under his supervision. The second alleged he used the police database for personal use.
"The Windsor Police Service is committed to fostering a workplace that is respectful and free of harassment," said Acting Deputy Chief of Operational Support Karel DeGraaf. "We expect our members to conduct themselves professionally and to abide by our values and code of conduct. Members who fail to meet standards will be held accountable."
The sergeant is demoted to the rank of fourth-class constable. He'll have to stay at that rank for at least five years.
Gawadzyn has been suspended with pay since the allegations surfaced in February 2023.
Recently, Windsor Police revealed another officer, Inspector Ed Armstrong, faced a charge of discreditable conduct, while the Ontario Special Investigations Unit is investigating allegations of sexual assault against a third.
