Federal housing plan will unlock affordable housing opportunities locally: Kusmierczyk

When the budget is introduced in the House of Commons on Tuesday, it will include a federal housing strategy that MP Irek Kusmierczyk thinks will greatly impact the region.

The plan lays out a strategy that forecasts 3.87 million new homes across the county by 2031.

Part of the plan includes the Public Lands for Homes strategy, which Kusmierczyk believes will help turn the HMCS Hunter property on Ouellette Avenue into affordable homes quickly.

"The federal government is looking at getting into long-term leases of surplus federal lands with organizations, not-for-profits and other entities that can get affordable housing built as soon as possible," said Kusmierczyk.

The plan also includes infrastructure funding for municipalities to unlock lands for more housing.

"Infrastructure is always at the top of the list and it really is one of the biggest barriers to getting more housing and more affordable housing built," said Kusmierczyk.

The plan also includes measures to protect renters and help people buy their first homes.

The Federal budget will be introduced at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
